How Long Does It Take to Become a Commercial Pilot?

But one of the most common questions asked by aspiring aviators is: How long does it take to become a commercial pilot? On average, the journey to becoming a commercial pilot in India takes between 18 to 24 months, although it can be shorter or longer depending on individual circumstances.
The process begins with meeting the basic educational requirement. In India, you must complete your 12th standard with Physics and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. However, if you come from a commerce or arts background, you can still become a pilot by clearing Physics and Math through a recognized board such as NIOS. This step can take a few additional months, especially if youre preparing while working or studying. Once eligible, your next step is to clear two medical exams Class 2 and Class 1 which ensure you are physically and mentally fit to fly. These medicals are mandatory before you can proceed to flight training and usually take 1-2 months to complete, depending on availability and processing time.
The next phase is the theoretical part of the training commonly known as ground school. This is where you study and appear for the DGCA examinations, which include subjects like Air Regulations, Navigation, Meteorology, Technical General and the all-important RTR(A), or Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical) exam. Clearing these subjects can take 4 to 6 months and though students can choose to give them at different stages, completing them early ensures smooth flight training ahead. After ground school, you begin your flight training the most exciting and hands-on part of the journey. To apply for your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) in India, you must complete a minimum of 200 hours of flying at a DGCA-approved flight school. This part usually takes 8 to 12 months, though delays can occur due to weather conditions, aircraft availability, or instructor scheduling.
Once your flying hours are completed and all exams cleared, the final step is applying for your license with the DGCA. The processing and documentation can take another 1 to 2 months and after successful verification, youll receive your CPL officially making you a commercial pilot, eligible to apply for airline jobs or further training such as type rating. Its important to note that this entire journey is not just about accumulating hours or passing exams; its about building skills, gaining confidence in the cockpit and learning how to make quick decisions in high-pressure environments.
Some students complete the entire journey in 16 months with discipline and good planning, while others may take up to 30 months if there are delays or if they take breaks in between. Choosing the right flying school, maintaining medical fitness and staying consistent with your studies are the biggest factors that affect how long it will take.
